Herniated Disc

When there is an issue with a disc that is located between the bones that make up your spine, you may have a herniated disc. These discs are cushion-like pads, but they can cause pain if they become damaged and affect the nerve roots.

It can happen anywhere along the spine, but it most commonly affects the neck or lower back. At Community Chiropractic Center in Poway, CA, our chiropractors offer a variety of natural treatment methods for herniated discs and other conditions. We will help you return to a pain-free life.

Causes of Herniated Discs

A major contributor to a herniated disc is age. Spinal discs can lose fluid volume gradually over time. This can develop into a condition known as degenerative disc disease. Tears or cracks can form as the disc wears, allowing the gel-like substance in the discs to escape.

Trauma is another common cause of a herniated disc. All it takes is for a person to lift something heavy or twist their body awkwardly for a bulging disc to result (especially in the lower back). If you are ever involved in a fall or car accident, a disc may also rupture or ‘sheer’ out of place due to the high impact of the accident (especially in the neck).

This can also cause a bulging disc that moves out of place. Patients who are obese are also likelier to develop a herniated disc, or if they have a family history of it.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Symptoms of disc herniation can be present anywhere in the spine but are most commonly in the neck and lower back. Symptoms of a herniated disc include:

  • Pain when you sneeze, cough, or move your body into certain positions
  • An ache on one side of your body
  • Burning, tingling, or numbing sensations that result from a compressed nerve
  • Spasms or muscle weakness
  • Limping or issues with balance
  • Having slow reflexes
  • Poor posture
  • Not being able to stay in one position for a long time
  • Issues with getting up from a seated position

Chiropractic Care for Herniated Discs

When you visit Community Chiropractic Center, we will examine your spine to determine the cause of your pain. Then, we will make a customized treatment plan for you. We often use spinal decompression to alleviate herniated disc pain.

This involves using traction/release over a full treatment period, focused on the vertebrae of the spine, to allow discs to move back into place and re-establish movement of fluids in degenerative areas of the spine. We also use cold laser therapy and stretching exercises to reduce your pain and help to re-establish easier performance of your activities of daily life.
